Despite receiving more than a few backlashes every year, The Oscars still stands as one of the most prestigious award shows not only amongst Americans but the entire global community of movie lovers. Each year, the Academy comes up with a shortlist of the best performances which in itself seems like an impossible and time-consuming job. So, we have taken it upon ourselves to predict the nominations for 2019 Oscars for best-supporting actress, taking in consideration performances of the best and the brightest of the movie industry.
Check out our prediction for best actor, best actress and best supporting actor for this Oscar season.
Emma Stone (The Favourite)
Emma Stone is a strong contender for her role as simpleton Abigail in The Favourite. Besides Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz, Stone portrays a young servant in 18th century England. With her wily charm and honest demeanor, she quickly wins the affection of the Queen. Jealous of her bond, Lady Sarah attempts to sabotage her relationship. The performances were so strong that all three primary cast members are our favorites for Best Supporting Actress. Stone already has two Oscar nominations.
Rachel Weisz (The Favourite)
Rachel Weisz has had roles in films like The Bourne Legacy, The Mummy and Constantine. Her strong, silent and ruthless portrayal of Lady Sarah was praised by critics and fans alike in the 18th-century drama The Favourite. Funny, complex and entertaining it is highly likely that Weisz will also crack the nomination list, alongside co-stars Emma Stone and Olivia Colman. Weisz already has an Oscar win and a nomination before.
Meryl Streep (Mary Poppins Returns)
It wouldn’t be an Oscars Nomination list without Meryl Streep. The veteran actress has won 3 Oscars and has been nominated for a total of 21 times. Mary Poppins Returns is the sequel to the original 1964 film. Streep plays Poppins’ eccentric cousin Topsy. So much faith has been placed in Meryl’s performance that she has already become a favorite for the Oscars, despite the movie releasing in mid-December.
Claire Foy (First Man)
Foy plays Janet Armstrong beside Ryan Gosling’s Neil Armstrong. The film is based on the real-life story of Neil Armstrong. The British actress is a favorite of many critics this Oscar season. Her pragmatic and fierce portrayal breaks the generic stereotype of the dutiful wife that stays at home and instead brings a bold performance. Foy researched Janet and found an incredible story within. Janet, who passed away months before the film’s debut has been brought to life by Foy’s performance. This would be Foy’s first Oscar nomination if she is nominated.
Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk)
In the early 1970s, Tish is about to get married to her childhood friend Alonzo ‘Fonny’ Hunt. Their dream of a future is derailed when Fonny is arrested and jailed for a crime he didn't commit. Regina King portrays Sharon Rivers, Tish’s mother. The bold performances, theme and cinematography of the film were praised, and King’s incredible performance was a memorable visual thrill. She is our favorite for an Oscar nomination. This will be her first Oscar nod.
Well, this is the end of our Oscar prediction series for 2019, and we are eagerly awaiting the Oscars buzz to start circulating. Leave your thoughts about the predictions.
