"We've decided that we are not really interested in having children." "It seems like it's expected that you'd want to have kids." Those were the words of Christina Hendricks, famously known as Joan Holloway in the AMC television series Mad Men, in an interview with Health magazine.
Well, this is not the first time she has spoken publicly regarding her lack of interest in starting a family with husband Geoffrey Arend, whom she started dating in 2007 and got married to in 2009. In an interview with People.com, Christina said her hectic work load does not allow her to start a family any time soon.
She believes she could not extend her family at present due to her work commitments. Asked if she is ready for a baby, Christina said, "Not any time soon. I feel busy enough right now."
Despite her constant denial to parenthood, Christina has been regularly asked the same question. Fed up, her reply was "It's just very normal for people to say, 'Well, when you guys have kids…' And then when I say, 'Actually I don't think we're going to do that,' people will say, 'Oh, you say that now." "It doesn't bother me, though. And, you know, there's a small chance I could change my mind."
But she had admitted to have given a thought to having a baby a while back. She said: ''I think about it [having children] all the time because people are constantly asking me. ''I'm not ready for that as of now but all my friends are having them. So the pressure is on.''
However, at the age of 40, Christina seems to have found other methods of parenting. The Emmy nominee admitted to have been exercising her maternal instincts with a new puppy. She said to Health "We got a puppy, and that's my idea of starting a family." She continued, "People say, 'Oh, that's practice for parenting,' but if it's practice for anything it's to be a mom to another puppy."
The lovebirds were first introduced by their mutual friend and Mad Men co-star Vincent Kartheiser. She confessed her immediate attraction to him in the March issue of the UK edition of Cosmopolitan.
She recalls that time saying "Geoffrey walked in and I was like, ‘Who is this guy?’ He had amazing hair and was all disheveled- he was running late and everyone was waiting for him. He just came in with this very high energy. He was just charming, funny and very magnetic. I got his number that night under the pretence of, 'We could just be friends'. And of course I immediately went home and Googled him.'
She also remembered the time where Arend proposed her to be his wife. ''Geoffrey proposed to me in a very traditional way on one knee, with flowers all over the house, and my favorite song playing. It was one of those perfect moments.''
Now it has been nearly six years since that 'perfect moment' happened to her. Still there are no signs of Christina and Geoffrey starting a family. All that is left for us to do is to respect their decision and move on with our lives. *Sigh!!!*
