Phyllis Smith on her Inside Out character "Sadness"

Inside Out is an American 3D computer-animated comedy-drama adventure film. The film is all set in the mind of a young girl named Riley Andersen, where five personified emotions- joy, sadness, fear, anger, and disgust try to lead her through life. So, Phyllis Smith has burrowed her voice to the character ‘sadness’.

Sadness became the total scene stealer inflaming character in the film. The character was a big hit among the audiences and about it Smith said with Entertainment Weekly-

“I didn’t. I had no concept when I was making the movie of how it was going to be edited together, and what the final product was going to be like. The first indication that my character might have a lot to do in the film was when a short Inside Out commercial aired after the Super Bowl. [The credits] listed Amy Poehler and then me, Phyllis. I thought to myself, “I got second billing?”

Sadness character was loved by the small children too as Smith shared that she was asked for the autograph on the sadness doll by the kindergarten girl. And many more kids come up to her to talk about the movie.

Based on the box office result, the movie nearly got nine stars rating out of 10 stars. So, probably the audiences enjoyed the extraordinary voice acting work of Smith as sadness.

So, how does Smith got her character as sadness? It was neither an audition nor her luck but it was due to insomnia. She revealed-

“Jonas Rivera — the executive producer of Inside Out — couldn’t sleep one night. So he turns his TV on and starts watching Bad Teacher. Which is this movie that I made with Cameron Diaz back in 2010,” Smith recalled during a recent interview, “Anyway, Jonas must have seen something he liked in Lynn Davies — which was the name of the character that I played in this film. Because the next morning he calls Pete Docter and says ‘I think I found our Sadness.’ “

Now her voice character sadness is able to win millions heart.
