Buss' parents divorced when she was about 11 and after that, she spent her few years with her mother. At age 14, she attended World Team Tennis where she met her dad who owned the Los Angeles Strings and when she reached 17, she moved in with her dad at Pickfair.

Buss was married to a volleyball player Steve Timmons in 1990, however, she couldn't remain in the married relation for a longer time which ended in 1993 after getting a legal divorce. Buss later explained that she was always attracted towards her business than to marriage. 

After her divorce with Steve, she got involved in a relationship with an American professional basketball executive, former coach, and former player Phil Jackson. Jeanie was dating Phil since 1999 and she also got engaged to him on 3rd January 2013, however, after remaining engaged for over 3 years the couple called off their engagement on December 27, 2016.
