Six years since her missing, whereabouts of Utah mom Susan Powell still unknown, Her now-dead husband, Josh suspected of killing her

There are somethings that remains a mystery no matter how hard you try and Susan Powell’s murder case has turned out to be exactly the same. It’s been six years since anyone last saw her, and with suspects unreachable and body not found, the police had closed the case back in 2013. However, frantic searching  for Susan’s killer continued.

Newly released police records show that Utah officials believe her Josh Powell likely killed Susan Powell and that his brother, Michael Powell, helped dispose of the body. Although authorities felt they didn't have enough evidence to prove that theory in court, they were the most likely suspects. The updated documents gave the public a glimpse into what police knew of Susan Powell's 2009 disappearance.

One revelation was that Josh Powell likely had an affair months before his wife disappeared. Police confirmed that a girl, name undisclosed, came to them to confess that she was having an affair with Josh. She told police she had a sexual relationship with Powell after meeting him through a dating service about six or seven months before Susan Powell disappeared. The woman said she knew Powell by the name John Staley, and she didn't know he was married. It wasn't until after she saw news coverage of the case that she discerned his true identity. A further light to the inspection showed that Susan Powell wrote in her journal that she was afraid of her husband and worried he might kill her.

Josh Powell was the only person of interest after his wife disappeared from their West Valley City home.

On Feb. 5, 2012, Josh Powell, age 36, killed himself and his and Susan's two sons, 7-year-old Charlie and 5-year-old Braden, inside a rented home in Graham, Wash. The boys were there for what was supposed to be a supervised visit. But Josh Powell locked a social services worker out of the house, hit both boys in the head with a hatchet and then set fire to the residence, which he had doused with gasoline. During the investigation, Josh Powell then killed himself and left all of his belongings to his brother, who later jumped to his death from a parking garage in Minnesota.

The family of missing Utah mother Susan Powell has settled a court battle over insurance money with the family of her husband, Josh Powell, who was the only suspect in her disappearance.

Court records show that two sides reached an agreement in Salt Lake City on Thursday, resolving the dispute over some $2.3 million in life insurance proceeds.

Details about the settlement were not publicly disclosed in court records.

Utah law says that someone "who is absent for a continuous period of five years" is presumed to be dead. Though that date passed in December 2014, attorneys for Susan Powell's parents, Chuck and Judy Cox, have said they have no plans to ask a judge for such a declaration.

But Terrica and Alina Powell, the mother and sister, respectively, of Josh Powell, had asked a Utah judge to find that the missing woman died prior to May 10, 2013. That was the date when Chuck Cox made changes to the legal trust belonging to Susan and Josh that eliminated Josh Powell's family as beneficiaries. Cox was acting under a provision to the trust that allowed a trustee to be appointed if Josh and Susan were dead or incapacitated.

In 2014, a federal judge in Tacoma, Wash.,awarded $2.3 million in life insurance proceeds to Josh and Susan Powell's trust and a related conservatorship controlled by the Coxes.
