Shanet was born on 1 October 1976 in New York City. Son of composer Howard Shanet. He attended the Bronx High School of Science where he studied film and psychology.

Laurence originally worked under the name Kranky along with his directing partner David M. Rosenthal up to their series of spots for Master Cabbie. The duo split in 2003 but Laurence Shanet still uses “Kranky” as his working moniker and production name. He is credited as “Laurence Shanet” or “Larry Shanet”.

He is also equally famous for his entertainment projects along as his advertisement projects. He was the Head Writer and co-creator of the animated series "Badtime Stories" and, in 2002, he directed the popular Off-Broadway play "Connections", a comedy about internet dating.

Apart from the AICP in 2004, Shanet has won CFP-E (Commercial Film Producers of Europe) Cannes Lions Festival Young Director Award in 2004, Regional Addy Awards - Gold - Television Campaign in 2006, and Regional Addy Awards - Best of Show in 2006.

He married his long-term girlfriend Alyssa Sutherland. They were dating each other for 3 years after getting together in 2009 and got married on 5th Feb 2012. She is an Australian actress and model. She is famous for Queen Aslaug in Vikings.
