Mara Brock Akil and her husband, Salim, who he's been married to for 17 years sign a deal for a new TV show.

American television writer and producer, Mara Brock Akil and television director, Salim Akil have signed a three -year overall deal for a new TV show with Warner Bros. TV.

Creator of BET’s Being Mary Jane, Mara Brock Akil is reported to be the executive consultant at Warner Bros. TV when her contract starts. Along with that, her husband, Salim Akil is reported to be the director of the new show according to Variety.com.

After two back-to-back overall deals and two hit series at BET, the creative husband and wife team will be moving to Warner Bros TV in May 2016. The duo will be creating a new series for the studio through their Akil Productions banner.

The husband and wife team have been under overall deals with BET since 2011. They had first joined BET in 2009 when the cable network chose the comedy series The Game which was also created by Mara Brock Akil. Both the series Being Mary Jane and The Game was executive produced by the couple. Salim has served as a director of both the series.

The Game which was cancelled by the CW became a game changer for BET. The show’s debut set ratings records with 7.7 million viewers. The show helped open the mainstream doors for series with black casts.

Being Mary Jane, which stars Gabrielle Union, is the BET network’s first one hour scripted series. The show is regarded as the network’s best show which could be attributed to the union of Mara and Salim, the show- runners.

However, the BET network has not announced the name of the new show -runner for the show ‘Being Mary Jane’ yet.

Apart from the highly rated shows like Being Mary Jane and The Games, Mara Brock Akil has also created and executive produced television series Girlfriends, which ran for eight seasons on The CW network.

Though she did not write any books, Mara Brock is well known for her notable writing for critically acclaimed series as South Central, Moesha and The Jamie Foxx Show.

In an interview posted in huffingtonpost.com, Mara Brock notable for the portrayal of issues affecting the black community, particularly black women quotes:

“My goal is to always create dynamic characters that look like and feel like people we know”.

Director Salim Akil has also directed movies including Sparkle starring Whitney Houston and Jumping the Broom starring Angela Bassett.

Mara and Salim got married in 1999. They have been married for almost seventeen years and the duo is still going strong. They have been leading a very successful life together, personally as well as professionally. They have two children, who are Yasin Brock Akil and Nasir Brock Akil.
