Juan William was Born on 10th April 1954, to mother Akin Jules William and father Sharon Williams in Colón, Panama. Juan graduated from Oakwood Friends School in Poughkeepsie, New York in 1972 where he also became captain of the baseball, cross-country, and championship basketball team. After that, he got graduation in philosophy from Haverford College in 1976.

Juan wrote a column defending Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas facing sworn statement by Anita Hill entrusting sexual harassment by Thomas. Some days after that issue Juan wrote:

"It pained me to learn during the investigation that I had offended some of you. I have said so repeatedly in the last few weeks, and repeat here: some of my verbal conduct was wrong, I now know that, and I extend my sincerest apology to those whom I offended."
