Anthony Weiner documentary premiers at the Sundance Film Festival.

Elyse Steinberg and Josh Kriegman’s 'Weiner' had a premiere at the Sundance Film Festival after weeks of speculation. Weiner is a fast, funny, insightful, and outrageous documentary based on Anthony Weiner’s decision to run for New York City mayor in 2013. It is one of the greatest campaign films that offer a full insight to what goes on in politics.

Further on the film digs into the character study of the disgraced New York City politician and his wife Huma Abedin, who served as a longtime aide to presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Her scenes riveted the audience more than the footage of her husband’s political downfall. Filmmakers Steinberg and Kriegman were lucky to have such remarkable access to the couple, in their home playing with their son, at the campaign office hitting up donors for money, in the car debating whether Abedin should make an appearance. Now if your question is how did they have so much access then let me tell you this that Kriegman was a chief staff for Weiner which the filmmaker himself revealed after the screening of the documentary.

The movie begins with Weiner as a young Congressman who rose to become a cable-news staple for his impassioned speeches on the House floor. The movie progresses onto a familiar scandal of sexting. After accidentally tweeting a revealing photo in 2011, Weiner eventually admits to carrying on sexual text and phone conversations with several women. He resigned from Congress shortly thereafter.

The documentary premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and is set to have its theatrical release on May 20. The movie will air on Showtime ahead of the presidential election in November.
