Layne Somsen has been promoted by the Cincinnati Reds.

With Jay Bruce on Paternity Leave, Layne Somsen has been promoted by the Cincinnati Reds to play in their upcoming games. Somsen, who currently plays for Minor League Baseball Triple-A Louisville has been called until Jay returns as he expects his first child.  The 26-year-old right-handed pitcher was selected by the Reds in the 22nd round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft.

The Triple-A Louisville manager Delino DeShields told him this great news in front of the entire team.

“I think he just realizes it’s going to be an up-and-down year,” Somsen said. “He’s just letting everybody know now.”

Bruce will miss the entire series against the New York Mets and return for Friday’s games in Pittsburg.

It was sort of expected that this right-handed reliever would be chosen. Not only is Somsen a gifted player, but also one of the seven players sent to play against top minor-league competition in Arizona Fall League during the off-season. In 10 2/3 innings with the Peoria Javelinas, he posted a 3.38 ERA and struck out 13.  He’s sporting a career minor league ERA of 2.49 in 173.1 innings with 68 walks and 175 strikeouts.

Layne, however, is still not included on the 40-man roster so another move will be made later. Since none of the players are on any treatment or injury list it will be interesting to see what move will the manager Bryan Price take to ensure that Layne is on the team.

So far, Somsen has got 1.04 ERA in 5 appearances in his Triple-A team Louisville with 11 strikeouts and three walks in 8 2/3 innings. With his current form, we believe he can contribute greatly to the team. Price, however, hasn’t announced a 40-man roster move yet but we believe that he will certainly choose Layne at this point.
