Journalist Kevin Newman’s son Alex is gay and he discovered it when Alex was at his age of 17. A boy who spent hours by himself in a park playing alone instead of playing with other kids, this kind of nature Alex had. Newman was okay with the sexuality of his son but inside, he always had the shame of Alex being gay and could not say up about him in public. His wife Cathy and his daughter were always close and supportive towards Alex but Newman opened his heart for his son only when he heard a heart touching news about a gay boy.
The story of a young hockey player who came out on YouTube, whose story was, wrote with all kinds of emotion- fear, sadness, laughter and joy. At that time when Newman was working on a W5 piece, he asked his son whether he could mention that he is gay or not in that segment. This was the first time when Newman spoke up about his son’s sexuality on media. Alex did not want his father to endure because of him but Newman was like okay with it and said that everything would be fine and from that time the gap between father and son started to decrease. The W5 segment of that time became emotional and inspirational and after some week, they were invited to appear on Canada AM together. There they talked about the struggle that LGBT youth suffer through and the hitting truth that 1 of 3 teenager from LGBT community are compelled to commit suicide so there is full need of family support such people.
