Jockey Kent Desormeaux said “Exaggerator may have caught Nyquist in the Kentucky Derby if it weren't for some traffic halfway through the 142nd running of the Run for the Roses”

Further,

"Hats off to Nyquist – still undefeated," Keith Desormeaux said. "We gave him all that we had, and I can’t be more proud of our horse. ... I thought he had him. I’ll have to watch the replay again, but I’ll be damned if Nyquist didn’t rebreak when he felt us approaching."At the end, Exaggerator, the Santa Anita Derby winner and Saturday's second betting choice, was charging hard from off the pace, but came up 1 1/4 lengths short to Nyquist, the race favorite who had run near the lead the entire trip. Desormeaux's brother, Keith, Exaggerator's trainer, said it looked like Nyquist felt their horse approaching and hit another gear."I had trouble,"

Desormeaux said. "I had to hair-brake him at the three-and-a-half – really slam on the brakes. It was definitely a difference of two lengths."
