Born Alice Faye Williams in North Carolina, she changed her name to Afeni Shakur when she became a member of the Black Panthers. She was accused of taking part in numerous bombings as part of the revolutionary black nationalist, arrested and freed on a $100,000 bail.
After her son Tupac was shot to death in a drive-by shooting, Afeni Shakur founded the Georgia-based Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation which provides art programs for young people.
She was the subject of Tupac's 1995 song "Dear Mama," detailing his rebellious childhood and praise for his mother. "You are appreciated," he tells her. "Ain't a woman alive that could take my mama's place."
