‘Star Trek Beyond’: Chris Pine on Kirk’s Psychological Battle

35-year-old Chris Pines talks about his character in the Star Trek Universe. With the upcoming movie Star Trek: Beyond just around the corner Chris Pine opens up somewhat about his character. Being a major character in the movie Kirk has had his share of complicated life. It’s fucked up actually.

“…it’s the young man dealing with the spirit of his father and how do you live up to the qualities that he showed so well. And for Kirk that’s a big deal and a lot of it is about that he’s not the young impetuous man of his twenties, he’s older and he’s captain of this ship, and how do you reinvent yourself and how do you find new meaning in something that you come to everyday.”

Kirk is now older than his father when he died. But is he more badass? His father might have set some benchmark that cannot be so easily surpassed. As such, Kirk is facing a battle with himself. He knows that although he has grown in age but uncertain if he has grown as a man.

I would say that this idea of turning a year older and realizing he’s surpassing his father in years but not knowing quite if he’s surpassing his father in terms of the kind of man he is, that weighs more heavily on Kirk in this one.

Star Trek: Beyond will release on July 22, 2016. Watch the trailers here.
