On Sunday night, Miss District of Columbia, Deshauna Barber was crowned the new Miss USA. Deshauna Barber is unlike any other past beauty queens. She is an Army Reserve officer and IT analyst for the U.S Department of Commerce. Barber is currently a logistics commander for the 988th Quartermaster Detachment Unit in Fort Meade, Md. The perfect example of beauty with brains! Moreover, she also takes pride in her family tradition of military service.

“I consider it to be a family tradition. It’s something that runs through our veins — patriotism and service for this country.”

But her military background isn’t everything that’s WOW about her. It was her thoughts on women in the military during the interview round that won her the title of Miss USA 2016. Judge Joe Zee asked her how she felt with women having combat jobs.

"The Pentagon recently made the decision to open up all combat jobs to women. Now some have questioned if this has put political correctness over our military’s ability to perform at the highest level. What are your thoughts?"

To which the poised Deshauna Barber, standing at a height of 5 feet & 10 inches, replied

"As a woman in the United States Army, I think it is an amazing job by our government to allow women to integrate into every branch of the military. We are just as tough as men. As a commander of my unit I am powerful, I am dedicated and it's important to recognize that gender does not limit us in the United States Army."

This answer of hers was followed by a beautiful speech on being confidently beautiful,

"To me confidently beautiful means understanding it’s not always about your appearance. It’s not always about who you are around and how they feel you look, where they feel you come from or your economic background. Serving in the military has taught me that being confidently beautiful is about being able to earn respect from people regardless of what you look like. As a woman in the military, people associate beauty with weakness and they learn very quickly that I’m extremely strong, and though I’m small, I’m powerful. Confidently beautiful is being myself and being very happy with who I’ve become."

Barber’s magnificent answer stood as the best while her competitors seemed clearly rattled out by the questions they were expected to answer. Barber broke into tears as her name was announced as the winner.

This is the third time Miss District of Columbia has taken home the crown.
